Fire and Earth Chawan

This chawan embodies wabi in its most direct form. The exterior is densely textured — the surface almost encrusted with glaze that has blistered, crawled, and hardened like bark or ancient earth during a long wood firing. The upper body is a dark, complex olive-black; toward the base, the glaze burns away entirely to reveal the warm terracotta of the raw clay, scarred and marked by the kiln.

The form is wide and squat, with thick walls that hold heat well. A chasen rests naturally in its generous interior. This is a bowl for the tea practitioner who values honesty over elegance.
