Cinder Earth Chawan

Few pieces in the collection have this degree of surface intensity. The exterior is dark — nearly black — and the texture is extreme: granular, pitted, almost geological in its density. Golden specks are scattered across it in no particular pattern, as if the kiln itself scattered minerals across the surface during firing.

The form is wide and open, a generous cylinder suited to comfortable whisking. A chasen rests inside in the photograph, its clean bamboo contrasting with the raw intensity of the clay. This is a bowl that does not ask to be admired from across the room — it asks to be held.
