Dark Encrusted Chawan

A wide, squat chawan with an exterior that reads almost volcanic — dark iron and blue-black glaze with a rough, encrusted surface built up through the long wood firing. The interior is a paler, cooler gray-blue, creating a surprising lightness inside the dark shell. The contrast makes this bowl feel like opening a geode.
