Snow and Stone Vase

Large areas of white-gray ash glaze have settled across this round vase in bold, asymmetric sweeps — not the fine dusting of ash that appears on many pieces in the collection, but thick, opaque passages of white that read almost like painted ground against the dark iron-gray beneath them. The contrast is immediate and graphic.

The form is round and wide-mouthed, with a short neck and rolled rim. The foot ring is visible and spare. An expressive piece, less subtle than many of its companions but no less considered — the ash placement has an intentionality that rewards looking at.
